Dr. Jack Latham wakes up in his familiar boarding school environment one day to realize that the world has changed overnight. Zombies walk the earth, many of his coworkers and students are gone, and much more is amiss. He must navigate a world of ghouls, fellow teachers, students, survivors, and other dangers. This novel is intended to examine the human condition, including issues of maturity and education as well as problem solving and psychology.

Zombie Academy Volume 1 ITG and Me eBook Joe Santamaria Andy Weigel

I had a bit of trouble writing this review and wavered between a three and four star for it.

The premise of the book was very good - a private school, fully walled in for security, mainly because the students are "gifted and troubled". The gifted part was true - very intelligent teenagers, the troubled part was more that they came from rich families that seem to be too busy to be bothered to have the kids around than that they were juvenile deliquents.

Jack is one of the teachers at the school which encourages independent study on a variety of subjects. The makeup of the staff and students is very important because your average teenager or HS teacher would not be able to figure out much of what they do - trust me on this since I listen to my HS sophmore daughter and the stories she comes home with each day! Jack is mid thirties and was an archeologist who now needs a "real job" to be able to pay the bills and was extremely happy to find the teaching job at the academy.

Most everyone - especially the women - HATE Jack. I am not talking about he occasionally irks them, I am saying full on, just looking at you make me ill, kind of hatred. My problem here is that there is no reason given for this, not even little hints. This doesn't make sense, especially since they all look to him to be a leader as well. I actually liked Jack and his personality. I also liked the way that the author portrayed him at the beginning of the book especially. His "sad sack" attitude (as one other reviewer called it) got a bit old after awhile.

The actual story starts on an early morning run for coffee and cigarettes (Jack's not so secret habit) when he runs down the street to the corner market to pick up a pack. Instead, he finds the body of the man who normally runs the store torn in half blocking the doorway and the store ransacked. He decides to get his coffee drink and take as many cartons of cigarettes as he can find (after all, insurance will pay for it), and runs back to the school. On the way back, he also runs into a homeless man who tries to attack him. He defends himself and gets quickly into the gate but kind of shrugs it all off.

At this point, he, and one of the other teachers, start to notice people are missing. They go looking for everyone else, only to find that almost all of the staff and students are gone.

This is when the book takes a turn into the twilight zone beyond the fact that there are zombies. No spoilers here so you will have to read it but I can honestly say it was a new twist for me and totally unexpected.

The story was good with moral dilemmas, the twist very unique, the characters well written, and the way they react developed nicely. I will get the next book in the series to see where the author takes this because of the twist but I hope that he steps back from the hatred of Jake and lets him become a "real" boy, instead of a caricature - my only complaint.

Zombie Academy Volume 1 ITG and Me eBook Joe Santamaria Andy Weigel Reviews

Without repeating everything another reviewer said, this was my main beef with the book. While Jack may not be your typical hero, there was no reason given why nearly EVERY other character loathes him so much that they cross normal boundaries of basic manners to actually tell him how much they don't like him...repeatedly.

So, having said what I didn't like about the book, here's what I did like. Pretty much everything else. The voice of the narration, the characters and their interactions, and I definitely liked the plot twist and the dilemma it introduced. I am looking forward to Volume 2 and hoping that Jack isn't quite so abused by his fellow survivors.
Great zombie novel - plenty of action, hordes of shambling horrors, and one school for troubled and gifted children stuck in the middle of it all. An interesting cast of characters with an unusual protagonist for an action story - Jack's a bit of a sad sack at the beginning, but he pulls it together when the zombies show up and finds a bit more purpose to his life. I'm looking forward to more adventures with Jack and the crew, so I hope book 2 is in progress!

Had to drop a star for the scene with the rat in chapter 34, though - I just don't think the physics would work out.
I tend to be leery of zombie novels, as the tendency to put out a cookie cutter product is too prevalent. In supporting a fellow farker, I decided to give this one a chance though.
While there are some similarities to other zombie tales (but let's be honest, zombies are a very covered subject)this book seems to take those ideas and make them fresh again. Our hero of the story, Jack, is a doughy little man stuck at a job that he neither seems to like or hate. He has a little mystery in his past, which may or may not put him at odds with his co-workers. Jack teaches at a school for gifted but troubled kids. While he is preparing for his day, he stumbles across a gruesome scene at the local corner store. Seeming to shake it off rather easily (one of the only major problems I had with the book), Jack returns to the school to find that most everyone is missing. After grouping together with the remaining people at the school, Jack discovers that he has woken up in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
Jack is an interesting character. He seems to be a recluse with an above average intelligence and a below average fitness level. He seems to be hated by most of his co-workers, but seems to gain their respect throughout the story. He is always uncertain of himself, yet when things get crazy, he seems to shine.
Without giving away too much of the story, there are a few unique ideas introduced. Conspiracies, super computers, and grateful strippers all add a neat twist to this tale. Like the show (and comic) "the Walking Dead", the zombies often take a backseat to the human characters. I appreciate the development of the characters, which at first came across as bland.
The most frustrating part of the story for me is that it ends on a cliffhanger. While that is not necessarily a bad thing, I want to know what happens to our academic zombie slayers. And I want to know now!!!!
So , short story long, if you are an prime member, you get it for free. So get it. If you have to spend five bucks, get it. It is well worth it. You would have just wasted the money on Cheetos anyways.
Great first effort, it was definitely worth the price. Zombie Academy was an entertaining read, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment in what promises to be a good series.
Great job for a first book! This isn't your average zombie story folks. There are plenty of plot twists to keep you guessing about what might happen next. I enjoyed the characters, some I'd drink with while others might get a kick in the backside! I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
Very nice job. As the title of my review says I can't wait until volume 2 is published. I am hoping Jack grows into the hero role that has been thrust upon him.
