As a prosecuting attorney Penn Cage sent hardened killers to death row. But it is as mayor of his hometown that he will face his most dangerous enemy.
In its quest for new jobs and fresh money, the town of Natchez has turned to gambling. Five fantastical steamboats float on the river, but one boat isn't like the others. Rumour has it that the Magnolia Queen has found a way to pull in the big players. And with them comes an unquenchable taste for blood sport, and the dark vices that go with it.
When a childhood friend of Penn's, who brings him evidence of the sickening crimes, is murdered, he begins a dangerous quest to find those responsible.

Greg Iles is a new author to me, but I seem to be hooked. I been reading them in order and am quite attached to Penn Cage's family. Let me be clear. This book is particularly dark. More so than the first 3. Each has presented a picture of Mississippi that was unknown to me and actually makes me uncomfortable with the racial complexities of Natchez. Although I might want to turn away from the reality that is presented, I find it to be educationally enhancing to me. The bad guys were truly bad, committed to pursing their hedonistic and financial objectives. Penn's girl friend played a bigger part in the story for which I was glad. She presented as a very bright and ingenious heroine and getting a closer look at her was pleasing. Of the earlier works of Mr. Iles, this was my least favorite. This is based on my crawling skin concerning the villains. They seemed over the top compared to his earlier works. However I am a fan of Greg Iles. I like his core characters well enough that I want to know what happens next in their lives.Product details

The Devil Punchbowl (Audible Audio Edition) Greg Iles Jeff Harding ISIS Audio Books Books Reviews
Greg Iles takes the reader to Natchez & surrounding areas of it on a rollercoaster ride of a read. This book delves into riverboat gambling, prostitution, dog fighting, & human trafficking. Mayor.Penn Cage (the protagonist) is approached by on old classmate friend who works as a blackjack dealer on one of the casino boats & implores his help in bringing justice to the problem. As Cage go's through the book uncovering details of the activities & deceptions going on and uncovering the truth. You find yourself in a suspenseful page turning novel.
I loved the way Iles takes you to Natchez (and many beautiful places there), travels around it ( hot air balloon, helicopter, kayak & various boat rides on the Mississippi river, & traveling places in surrounding Louisiana). I am a fan of Iles and his refreshing writing style & will go wherever he takes me in his books. I am a Penn Cage fan and want more books featuring him.

Trigger warnings for rape. Also abuse of both humans and animals.
Compelling
There is graphic brutality. No drag-you-down drama. I really enjoy Mr. Iles writing. Unfortunately this story ended on a cliffhanger. There were a lot of unanswered questions.
The storyline is easy to follow and difficult to put down. The descriptive writing draws the reader into both scenes and characters.
Procedures, actions and reactions are realistic. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking dialogue.
I am surprised that Daniel Kelly, Delta Force alumni, has a pony tail. Why would he have long hair that someone could hold on to?
I will re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.
As a warning, the subject matter of this book is harrowing and if you are the least bit squeamish when it comes to animals, I suggest that you quickly turn the other way. That being said, I had to put this book down a couple of times, yet the writing is captivating and I found myself right back in the middle of Penn Cage’s life.
As the mayor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn had no idea of the seedier side of things that were going on in his beloved town. When an old friend brings pictures and stories to his attention Penn cannot look the other way and by jumping headlong into this underworld, he puts both his and his family’s life in danger.
There is not one misplaced character in this book. Each have a story, as gritty as it may be, and by the end, not everyone is left standing, but those that are, will never be the same again.
Greg Iles creates excruciating villains. Whatever foibles his hero Penn Cage, or his father Dr. Tom Cage, or the many heroic men called upon to fight the villains may have are immediately forgiven when dealing with these sickly evil men. Mr. Iles describes a world in Natchez, Mississippi that is at the same time modern, yet steeped in a past that as William Faulkner said "is not even past." Penn Cage returned from a brilliant career as a Houston DA and novelist to his native town to heal from losing his wife to cancer. His daughter is only four at the time she lost her mother. Filled with good intentions, he runs for Mayor, wins, and hits the wall of prejudice that has hindered this town since its founding. When a childhood friend that lost his way asks Penn for help in shutting down a dog fighting/prostitution/gambling operation that grew out of a "legal" floating casino moored on the river, they open a plot worthy of the title The Devil's Punchbowl.
Every time I think the story can not get more intense, Iles ratchets up the suspense even higher. In THE DEVIL's PUNCHBOWL Iles goes overboard in his depiction of evil and debauchery with not one but two amoral criminals in this book. And then he throws in animal cruelty and sexual sadism for good measure.
This is the third book in the Penn Cage series and definitely the most suspenseful so far. Iles excels at setting up horrible no-win situations for his characters that force the reader to confront them and try to figure out what they would do when faced with a similar dilemma. It is true that in this third book the scenario of the plot is more unbelievable than the main plots of the first two books THE QUIET GAME and TURNING ANGEL. However, by increasing the peril that characters we have now spent three books with (esp Caitlin Masters and Penn's daughter Annie) Iles increases the already high emotional wallop his thrillers deliver to the reader.
If you like Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole mystery-thrillers Greg Iles Penn Cage books will be right up your alley without the Nordic names and alcoholism!
I'm definitely looking forward to reading the trilogy starting with NATCHEZ BURNING!
I read Books 1 and 2 and liked them, but this one was way too graphic and violent for my taste. If you like gore, this is the book for you! I could not finish it. However, I'm going to read Book 4, "Natchez Burning", as my sister says it's much better! I like Greg Iles usually but this book was too grisly for me.
